President John Agyekum Kufuor on Sunday, 31, December used his annual end of year Broadcast to the nation to launch the 50th Independence Anniversary Celebrations. The Jubilee year programme has been designed to cover the entire twelve months of the year, 2007.

The broadcast sought to encourage Ghanaians to make “fellow feeling” a visible positive attitude to ensure that the Jubilee Year becomes one of hope, happiness, joy and reconciliation. The President stated clearly that Ghanaians have a lot to celebrate and be proud of even with the challenges we have faced since independence.

President Kufuor urged all Ghanaians to become conscious of the environment and to do things to keep it clean. He tasked the District Assemblies in particular to make keeping our environment healthy and clean a major agenda item. He asked individual Ghanaians to keep their own surroundings, houses and private spaces visually pleasant to improve our image as a people.

He enumerated the challenges we have faced in 2006 to include high crude oil prices, the low water level in the Akosombo dam that has led to power cuts, and labour unrests particularly in the public sector that saw teachers and health workers among others going on strike. He said that with all these challenges, the Ghanaian economy had shown great resiliency and remained stable and growing.
