Cape Coast Municipal Assembly Wednesday, 8th February 2007, massively voted to confirm the President’s nominee for the Municipal Chief Executive Miss Mercy Arhin. This was a very important landmark in the history of Cape Coast so far as woman empowerment was concern.
Over 80% of the Assembly members voted in favour of the President nominee on the conviction that she was submissive, had good human relationship and affable. The new municipal chief executive was very enthusiastic about the concern of the assembly members and pledged to work very hard for the people of Ghana and Cape Coast as a whole.
However, it was surprising that the sitting Member of Parliament Hon. Christiana Churcher was nowhere to be found during the occasion. Some of the delegates present knew that the MP was in Cape Coast at the time the election was going on. An NPP party faithful reiterated that the sitting MP was not in good terms with party executives and that might have explained the reasons why she did not show up.
Information gathered by the Ghanaian journal indicated that the sitting MP sponsored some Assembly members to vote against the President nominee. This was partly due the factional politics that has entangled the New Patriotic Party, Cape Coast branch.
Our source stated that Hon. Christiana Churcher has no chance to win the primaries on the ticket of the N.P.P come 2008 parliamentary elections if she dares contest. However feasibility studies conducted has proven that the N.P.P is losing popularity and electorate are also fed up with the sitting M.P
Majority of the party faithfulls said any attempt by the party executives to nominate her for a rerun will make the party unpopular.
However, the Ghanaian journal sortie has gathered that the castle will be giving a ministerial appointment to Christiana Churcher on April 2007. But the paper could not certify which Ministry she would be heading.
