The Adansi South District Assembly is to release a total of 140 million cedis to seven Area Councils in the district.
In addition, the Community-Based Rural Development Project (CBRDP) is to provide the Councils with 150 million cedis each to enable them to undertake development projects.
Mr Francis Dorpenyoh, the District Chief Executive, announced these at the inauguration of the Akutreso Area Council at Akutreso. Already, the DCE had inaugurated Ampunyase, Akrofuom, Praso, Atobiase-Apagya and Wuruyie Area Councils.
He said the inauguration of the councils had helped to fill the gap between the district assembly and the unit committees. Mr Dorpenyoh reminded the councillors of their functions and said they should help to identify all taxable items and persons in their areas to enable the assembly to
improve its revenue generation.
The DCE further appealed to them to support the assembly’s revenue collectors by educating the people on the need to pay taxes and other revenues. He explained that one of the reasons for sharing the district assemblies’ common fund was based on the assemblies’ performance in revenue mobilization and that was why “we all should support the assembly to generate enough revenue from its internal sources”.
“We want to make this task of mobilizing internal revenue competitive amongst the area councils since we have intend rewarding area council that performs creditably in revenue generation”, he stressed.
Mr Dorpenyoh added that the trend of revenue from the area councils would influence the assembly’s pattern of distribution of development projects. The DCE appealed to chiefs to support the area councils to function properly by placing their wisdom and expertise at the disposal of the councillors.
Mr Dorpenyoh advised the councillors to see themselves as one people with a common aim of assisting in the development of their areas. He further urged them to desist from partisanship in all their activities and rather concentrate on the development of their areas and the entire district.
Togbe Michael Akpakli, Odikro of Akutreso appealed to the assembly for an office accommodation for the area council.
