na: Win an Election!

A R Haruna Attah

I was talking to an NPP presidential aspirant recently about goings-on, in and out of the party and prayed that the December congress would be without rancour. His response was swift: There will be!

Many other people feel that way, but why is something not being done about it, or is that also in the NPP’s democratic credentials? There are rumours, yes, only rumours, that something is being done quietly by some elders

I was quite in the thick of NPP things in the processes that led to the 1992, 1996 and 2000 elections and I can swear that the kind of apprehension in the air now was quite absent then.

The camaraderie was there: It was one party for one people by one people – now it all seems to have evaporated as presidential aspiration has become a matter of life and death! By the way, I wonder how many people know that the party political broadcasts on television for the ’92 elections were done by Dzaga Ameyi, Kweku Opoku and Harruna Attah Sometimes we all forget the little sacrifices we have made for our parties and Ghanaian democracy

And by the way we did it pro bono

The NDC was caught off guard and they circulated the rumour that the NPP had brought in some foreign experts!!! We were those foreign experts! Those were great days.

Though we lost the election, we enjoyed the spirit of togetherness that led us to want to “die” for our party. We had no “camps” to belong to. There was only one objective: win an election.
