Last week, a member of the Convention People’s Party’s Council of Elders, one Lucy Enin, who said she was one of the first female Members of Parliament in the first Republic, at a press briefing, took on both the leadership and the rank and file of the Party.
She derided the party’s leadership for superintending over what she described as the general inertia that has gripped the party at a time that the party was best placed to assume the reigns of power
She also accused the party’s rank and file for nominating a Flagbearer whose chances in the 2008 elections seemed to be blighted by a certain incriminating Serious Fraud Office (SFO) report.
It is rather worrying that the CPP is consistently being its own enemy. And like the previous experiences, the steady progression of the party towards yet another election, is again being bugged by a self-inflicted virus.
For the Enins and her inkling, we wish to advise that if their stance is premeditated by the factional desire of the minority few within the party to get Dr. Nduom out of the 2008 presidential race then they are not only fighting an already lost battle, but also sending the party back into the political abyss.
A little check would have helped them in their futile cause. The so-called SFO report had been in existent since the period of the military PNDC, its offshoot-the NDC and the NPP administration. The issue came up strongly during the vetting of Dr. Nduom for ministerial appointment. Like in previous instances, the Vetting Committee of Parliament failed to find anything incriminating against Dr. Nduom. That made it possible for Dr. Nduom to serve in three ministerial portfolios in the Kufuor administration.
Considering the draconian regime of the PNDC, we ask the said Enin woman whether Dr. Nduom would have had the freedom of walking freely under that regime, if indeed there was anything incriminating against Dr. Nduom in the said SFO report?
Many top legal brains including Justice Jones Mensah and Dr. Seth Twum, a retired Supreme Court Judge at one point or the other, had the chance to study the said report and found out that the report has no basis and only being induced by political witch-hunting.
It was based on that sound judgment that Dr. Nduom decided to contest the CPP presidential nomination- and indeed won massively. As Dr. Nduom had maintained, he has paid his taxes since the day he decided to re-locate in the country of his birth-Ghana, just as he had done during his sojourning in the USA.
Those calling for his head can at least check the records with the relevant institutions. And for all those party big-wigs who are hiding behind the poor old lady to perpetuate their mischief, we advise that they re-channel their energies and sinews into something meaningful that can benefit the cause of the CPP because the conspiracy against Dr. Nduom would not yield anything meaningful.
