The Minority spokesperson on Communications, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu (NDC) stated during an interview on a local radio stations in Accra that he disagreed to the sale of Ghana Telecom to Vodafone.
According to him, Vodafone is a mobile telephony company but not fixed line operations, and added that the government’s negotiations with Vodafone were not transparent.
Mr. Iddrisu disclosed information contained in the press release from Vodafone and Ghana Telecom were contradictory and should be rejected by Ghanaians.
He said 70% shares was being sold at $900million according to his findings, contary to what the Ministry of information and National Orientation billed at “$1.3billion plus a cash injection of $500million, totaling $1.8 billion”.
When the Information Minister, Mr. Asamoah Boateng was contacted to react to Mr. Iddrisu’s statement, he said the negotiation was transparent and thus Mr. Iddrisu should not expect that negotiations should be done at Circle or Makola market.
According to him, parliament are yet meet to deliberate on the sellout. He was however optimistic that the right figures would be out soon.
Commenting on the issue, the chairman of Onetouch, Mr. Yoofi Grant said, Vodafone is the 5th largest mobile operator in the world and so it is the best choice as far as mobile telephony service is concerned.
