Former President Jerry John Rawlings says he is not happy with the way President John Mills is running the country.

According to him the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is not asserting itself as the ruling party thereby allowing the opposition to undermine its authority.

He says President Mills has failed to deliver on his promise of providing dynamic leadership for the nation adding that the president has surrounded himself with people who are taking advantage of the President’s slow approach to running of the state.

This pronouncement comes weeks after President Mills cautioned political opponents and government officials not to take his humility and respect for the rule of law for weakness.

Former President Rawlings was addressing media men after a crunch meeting of party executives in Accra.

According to him, the position he holds is one that is shared by a number of party executives and thus is evidence of a worrying situation in the governance of the state.

“We are not asserting our sense of morality we are not climbing onto the high moral ground that the people voted for. Things are very slow but it is worse than being slow. Some of the things are just going in the wrong direction”.

When asked about his opinion on the appointments made so far by President Mills, the ex-President said “There is quite a bit of mediocrity… I think the party is aware of the problems and the party must make sure its voice is heard. They have got to be a lot more assertive they’ve got to remind people who’ve been elected that they are not independent candidates. They were elected on the platform of the party.

Meanwhile the Vice President, John Dramani Mahama has downplayed assertions that there are cracks in the NDC.

He says, the way the party handles differing opinions will either make or break the party.

“I wouldn’t say at this time that we have cracks but we have different shades of opinion and there are all kinds of power centres that need to be managed in terms of going forward”, he said.

The Vice President made the comments after a meeting with the National Executive Committee of the party.

In response to former President Rawlings’ comments however, the Vice President explained that the party will only deal with views expressed at the meeting.
