Question: Dear Pam, I would like to know that if we are hosting our daughter’s wedding, paying for everything, do we still need to give a wedding gift?

Answer: Thank you for your email. While there is no rule that says you should give your daughter a wedding gift, especially if you are paying for the wedding, many parents in fact like to do so.

It need not be an expensive gift, but something the couple can keep as a memento.

I spoke to someone recently who has been married for over forty years and she mentioned how much they treasured the cut-glass bowl that her parents had given them for their wedding.

I always think it is nice to give something lasting.
