When this paper revealed in its Friday, 29th May edition, that Newspapers in Ghana are dying, many were those who thought the publication was a joke and was a mere newspaper headline.
After six months into the Presidency of Professor John Evans Atta Mills and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, reliable information stumbled upon from highly placed sources at the castle indicates that circulation of newspapers that are perceived to be sympathetic to the cause of the opposition main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) would be banned from the Ministries with immediate effect.
This paper gathered, among other things, that the directive is geared towards assisting Pro-NDC newspapers to be financially secured since these Pro-NDC newspapers have championed the cause of the NDC’s return into power.
This latest development, our reporter learnt, is a thank you package to pay back for the good work done in promoting the NDC party.
If the directive is anything to go by, then Newspapers that promoted the achievements of the erstwhile NPP Government stand the risk of losing thousands of Cedis in the form of adverts from the Ministries under the new NDC administration.
The move also aims at offering contracts to the pro-NDC newspapers to finance their publications in continuum of further promoting the agenda of the party.
Sources close to the Castle revealed that the continuous award of advertising contracts to NPP newspapers could help the NPP to promote their agenda hence the need to prevent that from taking place.
The sources mentioned that newspapers which are usually branded as NPP newspapers which include – The Statesman, Daily Searchlight, The New Punch, The Mail (Formerly Accra Daily Mail), Daily Guide and The New Crusading Guide would cease circulation at the Ministries.
The above newspapers TODAY can reveal would make way for newspapers such as The Ghana Palaver, The Insight, The Ghanaian Lens, The Daily Democrat, The True Democrat, The Crystal Clear Lens, The Weekly Standard, The Informer and The Ghanaian Voice which would be enjoying full circulation and advert contracts at the Ministries.
