The Ga South Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Sherrif Nii Otto Dodoo, has assured the Ga South Distict of his commitment to ensure that the district witnessed rapid development and growth.
Honourable Sherrif Nii Otto Dodoo gave this assurance during his maiden familiarization tour to the various Zonal Councils within the Ga South District Assembly.
Ga South Municipal Assembly is one of the new assemblies which was created under the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) government during the Kufuor administration. This was intended to speed up the developmental process of Ga South which was hitherto under Ga West District in the Greater Accra Region.
Interacting with the Zonal Council members, chiefs and people of Obom and its environs during the tour, the MCE disclosed that the Assembly will institute programmes and projects that could ensure rapid development and then beautify the Assembly.
He explained that these projects and programmes will help alleviate hardship and poverty in the Assembly, hence improving the standard of living of the less endowed.
Hon. Sherrif Nii Otto Dodoo pointed out that the Zonal Council, Chiefs as well the people have an equal responsibility to ensure the successful implementation of these programmes and projects to achieve the expected results.
He further stressed that the revenues collected by the various Zonal Councils within the Assembly is not encouraging and slows down the pace of development in the Municipality.
To this end, he urged them to be proactive and creative to generate revenues within its confinement to boost the revenue income of the Assembly to enable it to speed up infrastructural development such as schools, construction of good roads and hospitals. These, he said when implemented would help boost the welfare and development of the people.
Speaking on behalf of the Obom Zonal Council, the Secretary, Honourable Pascal Krokroko noted that the council lacks basic needs such as offices and vehicles to perform its duties.
This, he identified, limits the Council’s quest to mobilize more revenue for the development and growth of the Assembly but added that though "the revenue avenues of Obom Zonal Council can’t match up with that of the two other Zonal councils, the staff and the Assembly members in the Zone, are doing their best to help revenue collectors to reap whatever is reapable".
Touching on some of the critical problems facing the people of Obom, he made it clear that the road linking other communities to the Zone is very deplorable. He said this has made it difficult for goods to be transported the Zone.
On education, he hinted that "the structures of most of the schools in Obom are nothing to write home about," adding that, there are open markets which served as pavilions but are not cladded."
He emphasized that this most often interrupted the pupils’ attention from lessons, due to the fact that the students concentrated on any passing object, be it cars, people and animals. He further added that "some Junior High Schools are without blocks."
Honourable Pascal Krokroko, however, appealed to the Ga South District Assembly to quicken efforts in addressing the myriad of problems confronting the Obom Zonal Council and its people.
Present at the event were Doyean of Obom, Nii Amartey II, Honourable Assembly Members, Heads of Department, Heads of schools and Chairmen of unit committees
