The Union of Industry, Commerce and Finance Workers (UNICOF) of GTUC has said its first Quadrennial Delegates Conference is a vital platform for growth at both the union level and the nation as a whole.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the union said this in a statement to the press as it geared itself for its 1st QDC to be held in Kumasi next week from 23 – 25 July 2009. It is on the theme: “Employment Creation and Decent Work: The Key to Real Economic Development.”

The statement noted that Employment Creation and Decent Work is a prerequisite for national development, therefore the government and employers must ensure that jobs offered have the tendency to uplift workers to live a life of dignity.

Over 700 delegates and observers are expected to attend the conference. The Minister for Manpower and Employment will deliver the keynote address at the official opening ceremony on Friday July 24, 2009 at the Great Hall, KNUST. The newly appointed Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority, Dr William Ahadzi will present an address on the theme, while the Ashanti Regional Minister would also be in attendance.

Some of the activities lined up for the event are adoption of reports and election of national executives.

The General Secretary, Francis Kofi Davoh, his Deputy John Esiape as well as other executives, including national chairman, Daniel Antwi-Bosiako, are tipped to retain their positions.

Observers say this conference is a testimony of the trust that the rank and file has in the leadership of the union as executives are retained to continue steering the union’s affairs to expected ends.

This conference would also determine the continuous direction of the union in furtherance of the implementation of its strategic plans.
