Residents of Tema Community 1 site 2 have blamed the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) for the poor state of sanitation and waste disposal in the area.
The residents indicated that the TDC have underperformed in trying to find a lasting solution to the filth that has engulfed the area.
This, they pointed out, posed grave health threats as heaps of rubbish and plastic wastes continue to be left unattended to.
The inhabitants could not comprehend how the TDC collected daily tolls of GH¢2 every month from them to manage wastes in the area but only to be given a jolt with indiscriminate disposal of wastes.
“The TDC collects GH¢2 every month from us to manage our wastes here but they only come for the money every month, and refuse to come for our rubbish and wastes,” Mr. Abraham Addams, a resident told TODAY.
The residents relayed that TDC janitorial officers sometimes attend to the wastes but end up dumping it just around the area instead of a landfill site.
These janitorial officers, the residents hinted, dumped refuse anywhere they deemed convenient, which they affirmed was creating a lot of inconveniences to them.
“What is the point if we continue to pay this money and at the end TDC officers do lazy work? We are pleading with them to help salvage the situation because it is nothing to write home about,” Madam Afi, another resident indicated.
Another resident who spoke on condition of anonymity said inhabitants were doing their part and were committed to help solve the problem but the TDC has failed to fulfill its side of the bargain.
“Of course, it is clear that the TDC have either embezzled the funds they mobilized from us or have misapplied the funds, that is why we continue to face problems like these” alleged the anonymous person.
“They are just taking the monies and they are using it for their personal and selfish interests,” he continued.
The residents also told the paper that that waste management experts Zoomlion have been mandated to collect the dumped refuse once every week but for some time now, they have refused to do their work.
