A Zimbabwean hotel group said Wednesday it had acquired a five-star lodge in Zambia, as part of an African expansion drive which has seen it invest in similar business in Ghana, Nigeria and other countries.
African Sun Limited spokesperson Farayi Mpofu said the hotel group had bought Royal Chundu Lodge in the resort town of Livingstone for an undisclosed amount.
She said the property, located on the border of Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe, was being extensively refurbished in readiness for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
It has 15 rooms, and is due to re-open next month.
"The opening of Royal Chundu is proof yet again of the group’s ambition to grow current roon index from 3,000 to 8, 500 by 2012," Mpofu said.
African Sun currently operates hotels Equatoria Guinea, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa and Zambia.
It aims to become Africa’s largest hotel chain. A few months ago, African Sun borrowed US$36 million to fund acquisitions.
