GTUC begins PhD programme in ICT, Telecom Engineering

Ghana Telecom University College (GTUC), a science and technology-oriented university in the country and beyond, has introduced a new PhD programme in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Telecom Engineering this month, with 12 pioneering students.
The President of the GTUC, Dr. Osei Darkwa, disclosed this at the school’s 6th Matriculation ceremony in Accra, over the weekend, where 177 fresh students were matriculated.
Out of the 177 students, 155 and 22 were males and females respectively. This brings the total student population to 1,408, including 188 foreign students from 23 countries.
Currently, the school has three core faculties, namely, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Informatics and Faculty of IT Business. The students are pursuing programmes at the Certificate, Diploma and Post-Graduate levels.
The President of the school revealed that the university had established several strategic goals. These he mentioned include promoting research and scholarly work; promoting virtual/ online education, by putting all their programmes online; promoting industrial collaboration and improve the school’s physical and technological infrastructure.
To the newly-matriculated students, Dr. Darkwa challenged them that “as new students who have been admitted to pursue various programmes, there will be many new things to learn and lots of challenges as you adjust to university life and study.
“Your course of study will be rigorous, but this is a proper preparation for the tasks that wait all of you in the wider world. This will become the place where your hidden talents will be discovered, and your known talents fine-tuned, so that you will become an embodiment of that gifted personality who will go to the world to make this country proud, uplift the African continent, and positively impact on the entire world.
“This university is the beginning of your academic and professional career. The fact that you are here is proof that you have the potential to define your destiny and to succeed in life,” he added.
On the rules and regulations of the university, Dr. Darkwa admonished the new students to abide by the rules and regulations governing the GTUC, stressing: “If you violate any of the regulations, the appropriate punishment will be meted against you.”
In his welcome address, the Vice President and Acting Registrar of the University, Dr. Robert Awuah Baffour, indicated that the school was committed to produce graduates that would come out bold and confident to weather the challenges of the world.
He added that the GTUC would provide the students with programmes to enable them contribute to the socio-economic development of the African continent.
