Gold Fields supports Regional Directorate of Education
Posted by on February 26, 2010 at 11:31 am in Business, MiningGNA – Mining giant, Gold Fields Ghana Limited, has donated two desktop
computers and accessories worth GH¢5,000 to the Greater Accra Regional Directorate of
Education.
Dr. Toni Aubynn, Head, Corporate Affairs and Social Development of Gold Fields Ghana Limited,
presented the items to Mrs Ernestina Afosah-Anim, Regional Director of Education in Accra on
Thursday.
Dr. Aubynn said the gesture was in response to the Directorate’s “distress appeal” to Gold
Fields, about a month ago to support it with computers to enhance its operations.
He said that Gold Fields considered computers as crucial to educational development in the
region and hence the presentation which “is in line with our vision to contribute towards
improving educational standards and infrastructure especially in our operational communities in
the country”.
Dr Aubynn said Gold Fields recently inaugurated GH¢400 million two-floor storey building fitted
with facilities to serve as classrooms within the Tarkwa Nsuaem District in the Western Region.
He said the company was also currently sponsoring 300 students, who were at various levels of
education, adding that Gold Fields did not only consider brilliance but also the needy in awarding
scholarship.
Dr Aubynn said Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, a wing responsible for some of its social
projects, used 40 per cent out of its annual two million dollars to support the company’s
educational delivery activities.
He said the company’s approach of providing bungalows at places that it built schools served as
an incentive for young teachers, who hitherto would want to remain in cities.
Mrs Afosah-Anim said most computers at the offices of the Directorate had broken down and
this was affecting its operations.
She expressed gratitude to Gold Fields for the donation saying “it has put smiles on our faces
and will spur us on to do our best for the country”.
