Defilement cases reduced in 2009 in Cape Coast Metropolis

GNA – Defilement cases in the Cape Coast
Metropolis reduced from 76 in 2008 to 65 in 2009 as a result of
education programmes carried out by officials of the Central Regional
offices of the Domestic Violence Victims and Support Unit (DOVVSU) of
the Ghana Police Service.
   The Central Regional Coordinator of DOVVSU, Assistant
Superintendent of Police Felicia Ayensu made this known in an
interview with the Ghana News Agency in Winneba.
   Ms Ayensu said her outfit received 15 rape cases in 2008 and the
same number in 2009 while unlawful ejection of wife by their husbands
increased from 8 in 2008 to 14 in 2009.
   Ms Ayensu said most of the rape and defilement cases have been
dealt with by the courts while the rest were still pending.
   Neglect of parental responsibilities cases increased from 1,131 in
2008 to 1,168 in 2009, while threat of death jumped from 111 in 2008
to 116 in 2009.
   Offensive conduct cases reduced from 73 in 2008 to 58 in 2009
while assaults also decreased from 379 in 2008 to 368 in 2009.
   Criminal abortion also moved from 4 in 2008 to 10 in 2009 while
causing harm cases increased from 17 to 21 in 2009.
