Government has secured ninety-five million dollars to implement the pilot phase of the Urban Bus Transit Project in Accra. The road linking the Central Business District of Accra through Kaneshie-Mallam-Kasoa has been selected for the pilot programme.

The Bus Transit Project is a public transportation system expected to replace the tro-tro and private vehicle usage system, which has been identified as being responsible for the heavy traffic jam in the City.

The Head of Institutional Development of the Ghana Urban Transport Project, Magnus Quarshie, disclosed this at a forum to educate students on the Urban Bus Transit Project at the University of Ghana, Legon, in Accra.

He said under the project, government will assist private companies and transport owners to procure loans from Banks and buy eighty to hundred-seater capacity buses for public transportation.

The Metropolitan Roads Engineer of the Department of Urban Roads, Alhaji Awalu, who spoke on behalf of the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Accra, said the Accra Metropolitan Assembly will continue to demolish structures on water ways to improve drainage and help decongest the city.

He called on the public to desist from politicizing the decongestion exercise, adding that it is done in the public interest.
