Azumah Compiles Career On DVD

Boxing Hall of famer Professor Azumah Nelson last Saturday evening premiered his DVD, a compilation of his 11-year boxing career, at the Silver Bird, Accra Mall.

The program, codenamed, “The Grand Premiere”, attracted former and current boxing promoters, boxers, actresses and actors among others.

The close to two hour Sam Kessie-directed video, financed by mining heavyweights GEODRIL, captures the boxing Professor’s exploits from the ever popular bout against Alfredo Gomez in 1985 through to the Marcos Villasana (1 and 2), Jeff Fenech (1 and 2) till he hanged his gloves in 1998.

Narrated by Ashley Morrison and occasional interjections by “Zoom Zoom”, Mr Kermah, Azumah’s former manager and the former Sports Minister Mr Amarkai Amarteifio, the DVD also captures his youthful days in Bukom, where he grew up, what stirred him to choose the sport, and his Foundation.

As the video rolled out on the big screen, it brought back nostalgic memories of the exploits of the boxing legend when the entire nation kept wake for his fights. The program was used to raise funds for the Azumah Nelson Foundation and was conducted by Mr Eddy Du Plan- a project intended to help the very needy youth.

Pretty film star Nadia Buari and Rev Benjilo paid ¢1,500 each for a copy, while Samir Captan, chairman of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Ama K. Abebresse, the MC for the program, poet, Professor Attuquaye Okine, Alhaji Toffik and several others paid ¢1,000 for a copy each.

The successful fund raising, preceded by a cocktail, saw many lovers of the legend demonstrating their support by picking the DVD for appreciable fees.

Azumah, in a brief presentation, described the premiere as special, saying, “Today is very special because it’s my first time of putting my boxing career on DVD.”

The Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Reuben Nii Nortey Dua commended all who made the program a success and praised Azumah for his humility and discipline in and outside the ring.
Also present to grace the occasion was the chairman of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Association, Ray Quarcoo.
