Member of Parliament (MP) for Dormaa East Constituency in the Brong Ahafo Region, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, has made a passionate appeal to the youth in the country not to allow themselves to be used by selfish politicians to foment troubles in the run-up to the 2012 general election.
Mr Agyemang-Manu urged the youth to channel their energies towards education, which according to him, is the bedrock of every country’s socio-economic development.
He made the appeal at a forum organised by the Brong Ahafo Students Union (BASU) Sunyani Polytechnic chapter as part of their week celebration, which was under the theme: “Building the capacity of the youth for socio-economic development of the Brong Ahafo Region.”
The Dormaa East parliamentarian also advised members of BASU and the youth in the region to position themselves strategically so that they could utilise any opportunity that comes their way, saying they could only strategise themselves very well through the acquisition of knowledge acquired through education.
Mr Agyemang-Manu was worried about the lack of self-confidence on the part of most youth from the Brong Ahafo region.
He called on them to develop self-confidence so that they could compete with other youth from other parts of the country.
He stressed that it is not the responsibility of the youth to enstool chiefs so they should not indulge themselves in chieftaincy matters but should live those disputes to be settled by appropriate institutions.
Mr Takyi Djan, the patron of BASU, on his part called on members of the association to educate members on their various communities on the importance of education.
He appealed to the Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Kwadwo Nyamekye-Marfo, to help in the establishment of a technical institute to feed Sunyani Polytechnic.
Mr Nyamekye-Marfo in his response said he would discuss with the appropriate quarters on how strategies could be put in place to help establish a technical institute in the region.
On that note, he encouraged the students to be studious and also promised to expand the school feeding programme in the region.
The MP for Sunyani East Constituency, Ameyaw Cheremeh, expressed worry about the way tribal politics was eating into Ghanaian politics. He explained that this development was hindering the development of the country.
He, therefore, called on his fellow politicians to desist from dabbling in tribal politics.
Other important dignitaries who attended the programme included the former Minister of Local Government and Rural Development under Kufuor administration, Kwadwo Agyei-Darko and Dean of Students at the Sunyani Polytechnic, Mr Kwaku Arhin, who represented the rector.
