The deceased, Miss Eva Agnes Adwoa Alodina, a first year Business Administration student, died when one of the walkways at the Independence Hall of the KNUST collapsed on her, killing her and severely injuring another.
The injured, Miss Gertrude Davies Kyere, is a first-year Pharmacy student.
Eva was pronounced dead on arrival at the university hospital, but Gertrude is still on admission.
The two were said to be classmates from St. Louis Senior High School in Kumasi, and were returning after visiting a friend at the Independence Hall when the accident occurred.
Some students who spoke to Citi News said they are gripped with fear after the dreadful incident on Saturday which led to the death of their colleague.
A student said other structures have developed major cracks and called on authorities to renovate the weak structures.
“There are other similar structures on campus with cracks on them, hence some of the students are scared of a similar incident occurring,” she said.
The local NUGS President of KNUST, Joshua Kpan, has also recommended a renovation of all structures on campus with such defects.
“There are many other structures on campus that were built the same time so I recommend that all of those structures be pulled and be built again,” he said.
Meanwhile, authorities of the university have paid a visit to the family of the student who died on Saturday to express their condolence.
The school authorities on Monday, April 26, went to Obuasi to officially announce the death of their daughter and also give their condolence to the bereaved family.
In an interview with Citi News the Public Relations Officer of KNUST, Mr Solomon Pamford, said authorities met the family of the deceased to formally announce the death of Miss Eva Agnes Adwoa Alodina to them and also express their deepest condolence to the bereaved family.—Citifmonline
