The Center for National Culture (CNC) in Cape Coast during the Republic Day celebration held a cultural variety programme for some selected schools in the metropolis to promote culture and traditions amongst school pupils.
The variety programme which was carried out in the local language allowed each participating school to put up a traditional performance be it dance, song or drama to educate the children on the various traditional songs and dances in the country.
According to the Deputy Director of CNC, Mr Emmanuel Akortsu the annual programme was to instil cultural principles in the pupils in order not to relegate the customs of the land to the background.
He stated that the centre decided to organise the programme every year for pupils at the basic level to make them familiar with the traditional norms in the various traditional areas in the country.
He noted that western influence was becoming enormous on children nowadays, adding it was in that direction the centre has decided to embark on the programme to ensure that the children do not become strangers when they grow up in their own country.
Mr Akortsu added that the programme was also to unearth talents and encourage pupils who have interest in pursuing the study of culture at the tertiary level to live up to their dreams.
The deputy director commended the Ghana Education Service (GES) for assisting the centre to carry out the programme and called on organisations and individuals to assist the centre to make the next edition bigger.
He also advised both private and public schools to make the study of culture and Ghanaian languages paramount, adding that it was pathetic some children cannot even speak their mother tongue all in the name of modernisation.
About nine schools including the Cape Coast School for the deaf, Philip Quaque Girls, OLA Girls, Falahiya School, Archbishop Amissah, University Junior High, George Ekem Ferguson, Adventist and Sir Peter Holdbrook Smith Schools participated in the programme.
Prizes were presented to schools which performed well.
