STORY: FROM MAGDALENE SEY, CAPE COAST
Gateway of hope, a charitable organisation in the United States of America (USA), last week sensitised students from the various second cycle institutions in the Cape Coast metropolis on sexual abuse, homosexualism, lesbianism, occultism, drugs and other negative tendencies that could destroy their future.
The students who were drawn from St Augustine’s College, Mfantsipim School, Adisadel College, Wesley Girls High School, Ghana National College, Aggrey Memorial Zion School, Holy Child School and Mfantseman Girls High School were also given counselling sessions and made to share their experiences.
In an interview with the media after the programme held at the Medical School Auditorium of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), the founder of the organisation, Mr. Jojo Entsuah, said he and his wife founded the organisation to share their ideas and experiences in their marriage and in the USA and impact positively on the lives of the youth, especially those in the second cycle institutions.
He said they had observed with dismay the increasing rate of same sex and the use of drugs among the youth both in the USA and in Africa and thought is wise to raise awareness on its devastating effects.
Mr. Entsuah said the organisation which is two years but have been operating since 2002 disclosed that a survey conducted by him and his wife showed that most students in the Cape Coast Metropolis had been sexually abused in one way or the other hence their gesture.
He added that the organisation which also embarks on a missionary project, has been counselling young people in the USA and have been organising medical outreach programme for needy communities in Ghana.
According to him, so far about 700 people have benefited from the medical programme in Accra and will soon sponsor three students to cover their Senior High School tuition.
His wife, Dr. Barbara Entsuah in a presentation on sexual abuse asked the students to believe in their abilities, dream and anticipations as well as talents and develop them.
She also advised them to stay sexually abstinent to help them stay focused.
A lecturer at the Physics Department of UCC, Dr. Kofi Annan advised the student to shun any negative tendencies such as wee smoking, illicit sex among others to be able to take up the development mantel
