WAEDA Registers 70% NHIS

The Wassa Amenfi East District Assembly (WAEDA) in the Western Region has registered 80,976 people representing 70% under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). The breakdown is as follows: indigenes – 230, people above 70 – 3,171; children under 18 years – 50,706; SSNIT contributors – 1,498; pensioners – 257, and; pregnant women – 9,866.
The National Youth Employment Program (NYEP) was continually pursued in the district.
As a result, 26 people have been engaged in the Community Protection Unit (CPU), 302 in Community Teaching Assistant, 79 under Health Extension Workers and 168 under Sanitation and Waste Management (Zoomlion).
Seven (7) schools in the district continued to benefit under the Ghana School Feeding Program (GSFP) as a result, total enrolment in those schools has arisen from 3,113 to 3,488.
Meanwhile, total amount of money received from the GSFP Secretariat and disbursed by the Assembly is GH¢ 90,050.00.
By dint of hard work exhibited by staff, the assembly is to receive a total amount of GH¢ 525,000.00 to supplement funding of its development program after a nationwide assessment of all metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies carried out on their performance for the year 2008.
This was made known by Mr. Stephen Baidoo-Acheampong, Wassa Amenfi East District Chief Executive (DCE), at the 2nd Ordinary Meeting of the 4th Session.
He said the assembly made an estimated total collection of GH¢ 192,065.64 from Internally-Generated Fund (IGF). The total amount of money received as the Assembly’s share of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) is GH¢ 414,253.7, with Member of Parliament (MP) Common Fund as GH¢ 24,533.35 out of which an amount of GH¢ 18,207.57 was spent on sponsorship of students and others.
He announced that a total number of 30 teacher trainees have been enlisted. This is made up of 2007-2010 and 2008-2011 groups under the Assembly’s sponsorship package. On the nursing trainees, records shows that by the end of July 2010, a total number of 8 who were sponsored by the Assembly had completed their training and expected to be working in the health facilities.
The DCE reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to procure dust bins in the course of the year which would be placed at vantage points across the district to address the issue of littering the major towns. According to him, vigilance by the security operatives, coupled with the co-operation by Assembly Members and the general public has contributed to the current peaceful security environment in the district and therefore entreated them to continue to play their part in ensuring the maintenance of the related peace.
He opined that the general security situation in the district saw a relatively peaceful security situation and entreated Members of the Assembly to continue to play their part in ensuring the maintenance of the related peace without which no meaningful development can take place in the district.
Mr. Baidoo-Acheampong mentioned that all unauthorized structures on the main streets of Wassa Akropong would be removed and all newly built toilets of the Assembly be made operational. It will assist the Agric and Environmental Sub-Committee to sensitize the public on land issues, expedite action on the construction of the lorry park at Wassa Akropong and provide the Department of Social Welfare with logistics to apprehend all school-going children who would be found on market days.
