NPP Is Suarez Of Ghana Politics – Minister

The Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo has described members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) as being the ‘Suarez’ of Ghana’s politics.

According to the Minister, as Suarez of Uruguay broke the heart of many Ghanaians during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa by using his hands to stop a goal which could have taken the Black Stars to the semi-finals of the tournament, so is the NPP emulating the Uruguayan player in opposition.

He said the name Suarez became fit for the NPP during the debate and passage of the Korean STX Housing agreement deal on the floor of parliament. “Like Suarez of Uruguay, the NPP wanted to use whatever means at their disposal to stop parliament from accepting the STX deal and this include walking out of the House but thank God the majority of the parliamentarians were able to accept the deal for the housing projects to start”, he stated.

Hon. Ofosu Ampofo said this over the weekend at Akyem Abomosu during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) campaign launch towards winning the Atiwa by-election. He revealed that, it is very glaring that the police including other security operatives are leaving in houses that are in deplorable state.

“Therefore, the Mills government decided to enter into an agreement with the Korean STX construction company to provide 30,000 housing units to the security personnel and additional 170,000 for other workers in the country”, he said.

He however noted that members of NPP and their parliamentarians decided to kick against the project even though they are aware that the 200,000 housing units would help in reducing the housing deficit in the country which is estimated to be over one million.
“The NPP and its parliamentarians have shown that whatever good policies that the Mills government would implement in this country will receive their strong rejection and that is how come they have come to earn the name ‘Suarez’ in the politics of Ghana”, he explained.

The Regional Minister therefore told the electorate in the Atiwa constituency not to make any mistake and add another Suarez to the already existing ones by voting for the NPP candidate.“Voting for the NPP candidate will mean voting for another ‘Suarez’ who will kick against the good policies of the government and since we are all craving for development, I will urge you to vote for Hon. Atta Twum who is the NDC candidate and who will not kick against the good policies of the government”, he told the electorate.

He said Hon. Atta Twum has proved that he is ever ready and has also demonstrated the will to serve the people in the Atiwa constituency. This he said was because; Hon. Twum contested the 2008 general elections as an NDC parliamentary candidate even though he was aware that the area is a strong hold of the NPP.

“Hon Twum has shown the commitment to serve and I will urge you to vote for him on August 31st as the Member of Parliament for the Atiwa constituency”, Hon. Ofosu Ampofo appealed to the electorate.
For his part, the National Organizer of NDC, Mr. Yaw Boateng Gyan urged the electorate to ensure free and fair elections.

He said, per the rule that governs elections in the country, it is one man one vote and whoever decided to go against that rule would be punished by law.“Let us all make sure the election becomes free and fair and by doing so I will urge you to vote for Hon. Atta Twum who will bring development which the constituency never got in the 8 year rule of the NPP”, he appealed to the electorate.
