School feeding program on course
Posted by on August 25, 2010 at 6:07 pm in Education, Local NewsThe National Coordinator of Ghana School Feeding Programe, S. P. Adamu, has debunked speculation in some section of the media that sought to describe the impugn that the program was dying, stressing that “it had rather taken a tremendous shape.”
Speaking to Today in an interview, he noted that the program had streamline the initial challenges inherited from the previous administration, which he observed, stem from inconsistencies in respect of selection of underprivileged schools in less-endowed communities in a bid to eradicate poverty.
According to him, there was no justification in extending the facility to cover schools such as Achimota and Roman Ridge schools at the expense of schools in the deprived areas, including Chorkor, Nima and James Town.
He maintained that a major stakeholder sponsoring the program has assured the nation of their preparedness to support the program.
He pointed out that 750,000 pupils are currently benefiting from the feeding program, adding that more schools will be rolled into the program by the close of this year to hit the targeted one million forty thousand pupils.
He stressed that the challenges confronting the project included the need to delist the well-endowed schools from the program to enable the main targeted group in more deprived communities to benefit.
The caterers’ impasse, which, according to him, has been lingering for a while, has been resolved.
Mr. Adamu noted that the programme has attracted more non-governmental organizations which have expressed interest to lend their support the program.
