Save CEPS!
Posted by on August 27, 2010 at 4:16 pm in EditorialThe Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) have been in the news lately for perceived corrupt acts that some of its officers are believed to be engaging in.
Following these reports, CEPS have come under intense pressure, and this seem to be taking the better part of the security agency.
A news item published on the front page of the Thursday, 26th August, 2010 edition of the Daily Graphic reported that about 19 CEPS officials faced probe for their alleged involvement in various acts of corruption.
Some of the allegations included reports of corruption received at the CEPS Intelligence Unit in the year 2009 from various clients and individuals who had, in one way or the other, fallen prey to the corrupt tactics of some CEPS officials at the Tema Port.
If this report is anything to go by, then there should be a great cause for worry. It appears we are losing the war against corruption in this part of our world as far as the image of our security agencies is concerned.
The CEPS officials in the said story by their conduct have done a great disservice to CEPS as an institution.
It also means that the perception the public have about CEPS officials being corrupt will further deepen.
However, we welcome news that investigations into 23 cases reported against CEPS officials have been concluded and appropriate sanctions instituted against the affected personnel.
We believe that the recommendations of the investigation committee, if indeed those CEPS workers are culpable, must be implemented to the latter. At least, when this is done, it would go a long way to deter other officials who have such intentions of committing the same offence.
It is in this vein that Today commends the CEPS Commissioner, Mr. E. Kumah Lanyon, for his efforts to clean the rot in his outfit.
For us on this paper, we think the CEPS commissioner by his action has demonstrated his readiness to rid his outfit of corruption. On this note, we urge all and sundry to rally behind Mr. Kumah Lanyon to go about this house cleaning.
