Justice Oppong Must Resign From Judiciary – MP
Posted by on August 30, 2010 at 2:12 pm in Other Top StoriesDeputy Energy Minister and MP for Tamale central Hon. Inusah Fuseini has asked Justice Anthony Oppong to resign from the judiciary for tainting himself with politics.
According to the MP who doubles as a legal practitioner, Justice Oppong cannot be trusted as a member of the third most powerful institution of the country.
Contributing to a panel discussion on ‘The Big Issue’ on Citi Fm, over the weekend, the MP accused the Judge of fighting a political party’s battle in the court rather than sticking to his judiciary business.
“The judge in recusing himself was entitled to demand that the issue be gone into to establish the veracity of the claim and that should have been it. Justice Oppong should not only recuse himself but resign from the judiciary because what he has said is embarrassing to himself and the Judiciary. A judge at all times, your integrity and reputation should be above board” he said.
“In fact as a Lawyer, I can tell you that Justice Oppong has put on the spectacles of a politician and looked at a matter from the political angle clearly. Silence is a virtue and in Court the Judges tell us that, you have to keep quiet and let the facts of the case vindicate you. Indeed Justice Oppong has tainted himself.
If he is listening to me, he is a good Judge but I can now tell him that he has tainted himself. I will see him more as a person who is opposed to the NDC and has no sympathies for the NDC and in doing that, clearly Justice Oppong’s judgment will be crowded by his idiosyncrasies”.
Justice Oppong in delivering his final ruling said the NDC’s threats and criticisms to clean the judiciary were enough grounds for him to recuse himself from the case. He also said he felt “insulted, scandalized and bastardized.” He further asked NDC to stop its “useless propaganda against the Bench and get their acts together as professional lawyers instead of appearing to be political stooges”.
The Attorney General Betty Mould Iddrisu has since condemned the comments by the Judge, describing them as most unfortunate and unjustified.
But the Tamale central MP says beyond this, Justice Oppong must resign. He sated emphatically that it was clear that he is aligned to the opposition New Patriotic Party.
“In rescuing yourself it is honorable and most appropriate to just announce to the Court that in view of the current development, you are rescuing yourself from this matter period and go away. You don’t have to fight the politicians’ battle for him in the court of law, you don’t do that.
