Plan Ghana, a non-governmental organisation in Ghana, in collaboration with Child’s Right International (CRI) and Ghana National Collation of the Child, yesterday donated items worth GH¢40,000 to the Ghana Prisons Service.
Other state agencies that benefited from the donation were the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) and the Department of Social welfare.
The donation was to see to the effective running and implementation of mechanisms in the area of protection of children and youth involved in crimes in the country.
“The overall objective of this project is to contribute to the implementation of mechanisms, systems and laws in the area of protection of the children and the youth in justice institution and the conflict with the law,” Programs Support Manager of Plan Ghana, Mr. William Agyekum Acquah said.
The items donated included: bunk beds, blankets, mattresses, mosquito nets and other correctional items to help in their training and provide them a comfortable sleeping atmosphere.
According to the programs support manager, they made the donation because of the fact that children who are in correctional centres were living under poor conditions.
Some of the children in correctional centres, he observed, should not have been at such places because according to him, they did not commit serious offences.
On his part, a representative of DOVVSU, ASP Alichewu Abdullah, stressed that the donation will go a long way to benefit inmates and children living in correctional facilities.
The Commander of Ghana Prisons, Mr. Alhassan Legiabo, appealed to Ghanaians to generously support his outfit and other institutions that take care of societal deviants.
He noted that when this is done it will help stem the tide of juvenile crimes in the country.
