C/R hospital to become teaching hospital
Posted by on September 7, 2010 at 2:25 pm in Health, Local NewsPlans are currently underway to upgrade the Central Regional hospital popularly known as “Interburton” into a teaching hospital to help train medical students to address the problem of inadequate health personnel facing the country.
This was made known by President John Evans Atta Mills in Cape Coast over the weekend during the Fetu Afahye celebration by the chiefs and people of the area.
According to President Mills, a teaching center, pavilion and an auditorium are under construction at the hospital to facilitate the teaching process.
President Mills added that the construction of a diagnostic centre will soon begin at the hospital to facilitate effective teaching and learning when the training begins.
He assured the people of the region that his administration was doing whatever they can to deliver on all the promises they made to Ghanaians and appealed to the people to give them more time to put things in order.
“I will never turn my back to the nation or my people, there are so many things we are doing as a government and the dividends will soon show for all to see the good works we are doing,” the president emphasized.
He disclosed that he had a meeting with FIFA President, Mr. Sepp Blatter, when he visited Switzerland and that a FIFA center of hope will be built in Cape Coast to promote football in the area and keep the youth busy due to the role Cape Coast has played in the football history of the nation.
President Mills called for unity among the people and urged them to eschew violence and all negative tendencies that will draw back the development of the ancient city.
He presented two sets of jerseys and ten footballs each to the two football clubs in the area – the Mysterious Ebusua Dwarfs and the Cape Coast Venomous Vipers.
The Central Regional Minister, Mrs. Ama Benyiwa-Doe commended the people of the area for maintaining peaceful co-existence over the past years, indicating that some festivals have become life-threatening ones due to chieftaincy disputes.
She stated that though the Atta Mills government is young, it has put a lot of programmes and policies in the pipeline to achieve its Better Ghana Agenda.
Mrs. Benyiwa Doe hinted that city guards have also been increased to improve sanitation in Cape Coast.
She revealed that the region has created land guards for investors and called on investors to invest in the region for rapid development.
The regional minister said infrastructure has been improved in 26 senior high schools in the region to ensure the smooth implementation of the four-year SHS system.
She appealed to the president to assist the region to construct bungalows for doctors and nurses to ensure quality healthcare delivery.
The Member of Parliament for the area, Lawyer Ebow Barton Oduro, who doubles as the deputy Minister for Justice and Attorney-General, disclosed that a science laboratory is being constructed in the area for basic schools to promote science education.
The Paramount Chief of Oguaa Traditional Area, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, said the computerized selection of schools and the 30% quota system was not helping Cape Coasters and appealed to the president to review the selection process.
He also appealed to government to construct the Cape Coast Market, dredge the Fosu Lagoon and complete the construction of the Emintimadze Palace.
Meanwhile, all dignitaries who graced the occasion were acknowledged with the exception of Nana Akufo Addo, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag bearer and his entourage.
