Land Tours Ghana Ltd Selected to Host ‘Semester at Sea’ and Nobel Peach Laureate.

Land Tours is proud to host the Semester at Sea participants in Ghana for the third time. On the Semester at Sea ship is a special guest lecturer, Nobel Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who has joined the ship for the entire semester. This Wednesday, the 22nd of September, the Semester At Sea ship will berth at the Takoradi port for four days before sailing to its next destination.

With over 700 people on board the ship, Land Tours has been selected as the ship’s destination manager and will provide a variety of trips and experiences relevant to each individual’s discipline, which will increase cross-cultural understanding and awareness of world issues. Planned activities include a variety of educational experiences that will give all the participants a good sense of Ghanaian culture, as well as raise awareness of the developmental challenges faced by various communities. The activities include a traditional naming ceremony, where the participants will be given African day names and become a member of a local clan, cultural drumming and dancing workshops, touring the Cape Coast and Elmina castles, building homes with Habitat for Humanity, overnight home stays at Atonkwa Village in Elmina and hiking in Ankassa National Park.

Semester at Sea is the pace-setter in shipboard programs abroad and is administered by the Institute for Shipboard Education. The program is also academically sponsored by the University of Virginia, ranked the second best public university in the United States of America.

On August 27, 2010, a group of students, professors, staff members and crew boarded the MV Explorer, in anticipation of a unique, unforgettable semester experiencing various cultures in countries around the world. For one semester, lasting from August to December, the ship will travel through Spain, Morocco, Ghana, South Africa, Mauritius, India, Singapore, Vietnam, China, Japan, Hawaii, and finally back to the United States.
