The Effiduase Asokore Divisional Command of the Ghana Police Service last Friday arrested one of the suspects who called for the blood of the Ashanti Regional Minister and the District Chief Executive during a meeting of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party hierarchy in the constituency.
Habib Awudu is said to be one of the frontliners of the notorious youth groups of the ruling party in the area, who has constantly been at the heels of the DCE and has been cited in all acts of vandalism in the area.
Interestingly, Habib is said to have been arrested by the Divisional Commander, Superintendent Alex Amenyo, himself while the latter was on his way to a funeral.
The NDC youth personally confronted the divisional commander on the said day and demanded that he released the DCE to them or even they, the police, would be in deep trouble.
“This is the guy who tried to manhandle the divisional commander while the latter was protecting the DCE and even tried to take his gun from him. Superintendent Amenyo threatened to shoot him as he tried to take the gun from him,” a deep throat source at the divisional command told Today.
Earlier this month, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Kofi Opoku Manu, in the company of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NDC, Yaw Obimpeh, led some national executives of the party to a meet with members of the Effiduase branch of the party in what was supposed to be a restructuring and unity talks. Unfortunately that meeting turned nasty.
The poor organization of the meeting led to a serious attack on the DCE, Hon. Kwadwo Adae, and the regional minister, who were under siege for several hours until police reinforcement arrived from Kumasi.
The Effiduase district of the Ashanti Region has been in the news for all the wrong reasons since the inception of the NDC government due to an irresolvable misunderstanding between the DCE and some leading members of the party in the area.
The aggrieved members of the party led by one Alhaji Adamu Issah, aka Malla Allah, who is a former constituency chairman, have complained several times of betrayal and have therefore called for the DCE’s removal from office since last year.
The Effiduase Asokore Divisional Commander, Sup. Alex Amenyo, in a telephone conversation with Today, confirmed the arrest of Habib, adding quickly that ‘his statement has been taken and granted bail and will report to the police on Tuesday.’
He also confirmed that the suspect had been on the frontline of most of the vandalism organised by the NDC youth in the area.
Sup. Amenyo told the paper that the police in the area had not left those who indulged in the attack against the DCE, vowing to deal with all of them in due course.
He said his outfit had called on Mallam Allah and Adams Imunana, both opinion leaders in the area, to help in the investigation and also bring all those who were involved in the attack to book.
