World Champion Cameron van der Burgh secured South Africa’s third gold at the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday after surging to victory in the 100m breaststroke final in New Delhi.

The 22-year-old won in a time of 1:00.10, lowering the Commonwealth Games record for the third time in two days.

Australia’s Christian Sprenger won silver followed by teammate Brenton Rickard in bronze.

Van der Burgh’s victory followed hot on the heels of SA veteran Roland Schoeman’s bronze in the 50m butterfly on Wednesday and continued South Africa’s good form in the pool.

Chad La Cros and Natalie du Toit are the other two South Africans to have won gold at the event.

The big South African was quick out of the blocks on Wednesday, leading from start to finish, and while he was pushed hard in the final 10 metres, he was strong enough to hold for first place.

Earlier, Wendy Trott and Gideon Louw had kept South Africa in the headlines in the pool on day three of the Games by qualifying for the 800m freestyle final and the 100m freestyle semifinal respectively.
