India’s largest automobile company, TATA Motors says it is continually assessing the potential of the Ghanaian automobile market and could set up an assembly plant in the country if the conditions become right.

The TATA Company, which started operations in Ghana in the mid 1970s, lost grounds in the Ghanaian automobile market for a while but have re-strategized and are making inroads.

The company will soon commission one of the biggest automobile workshops on the continent, covering about two acres of land. The move is to make Ghana TATA’s central hub to supply their markets in the West African sub-region.

Managing Director of TATA Ghana, Vivek Sarawat said the economic conditions in Ghana appear favourable and his company is constantly evaluating the situation before making a definite decision in the near future.

“The assembly of any product, be it buses, car, pick-up or any other product depends on the market size because putting up a plant is not a small investment like the showroom or the work shop,” he pointed out.
But he is “very sure, very confident that the days are not far” when the company would make a definite move.
