Ursula Owusu caught in insults net
Posted by on October 29, 2010 at 9:33 am in Other Top StoriesLawyer and a member of the New Patriotic Party Ursula Owusu has brushed aside accusations she has been tongue-lashing the president. She told Joy News her comments against the president are not insults but plain truth.
She was responding to President John Mills’ call against the politics of insults which appear to have saturated the political and media landscape.
President Mills made the call at the commissioning of the Accra-Tema railway line in Tema on Thursday.Hours after the President’s admonition, one person known to be an avowed critic of President Mills says criticisms must be differentiated from plain insults.
She explained that members of the NPP were victims of the politics of insult and tramped-up lies by the NDC but chose not to respond at the time.
She said the decision by the NPP to respond to these insults must have drawn the president’s attention to it.“They ran the campaign on lies and insults and the evidence is clear for everyone to see. I have been accused of insulting the president and I find it very very amusing. Because I just spoke the truth. Truth may be unpalatable. It may be uncomfortable but it can by no stretch of imagination be called an insult.“Let’s just put that one aside. It is a myth being peddled by the NDC to make them look good,” Ursula said.
She said criticisms may be hard hitting but should not be misconstrued as insults saying if you don’t have a thick skin for criticisms, politics is not the profession for you.
She said politicians must be able to inject humour in their activities. However, Kobby Acheampong, Deputy Tourism Minister who is reported to have made the infamous kookooase kurasinii comment which provoked a storm of controversy said the NPP must be blamed for the insults.
According to him, it was the NPP who started the name calling in 2008.He said humour is very subjective, adding, what Ursula Owusu will consider humorous will be considered an insult by another person.
