Former Kumasi Mayor Patricia Appiagyei says she has forgiven her predecessor, Maxwell Kofi Jumah for insinuating that she got to become Mayor only after trading sex for the position.

The Asokwa Member of Parliament made the allegation apparently to discredit his successor’s ambition to contest him for the seat. Mr Jumah later apologised to Madam Patricia Appiagyei following a huge media storm over his comments.

Speaking exclusively to Citi News after a gender empowerment seminar organized by the Institute of Economic Affairs, Madam Patricia Appiagyei expressed grave concerns about what she describes as male chauvinistic tendencies against women who go into politics. She said the stereotyping and insults against women in politics must stop. She nonetheless said she holds no qualms against Mr Jumah over his insinuations. “I always say that I am a Christian and as a Christian if someone offends you seventy times you have to forgive the person. I don’t think I am going to hold any attack on this thing”.

Madam Appiagyei added that people should refrain from such chauvinistic comments since it tends to discourage women from entering politics. “There has been some political notion that women who indulge themselves in politics are branded in some unsavoury way. Men know that women don’t want to be called names and so when a woman want to contest a man what we find ourselves is been insulted”.

“When a woman is interested in undertaking a political career what happens is that she is deterred by the insults…and therefore we must detest that kind of behaviour with this politics of branding women and then insulting them to discourage them from participating in the political platform”.
