…More focus on grassroots

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) this time around is leaving nothing to chance in the run-up to the 2012 election.

With twenty-four (24) months to election 2012, the paper can state that the rank and file of the CPP is working diligently on the ground to have a vibrant, united and formidable party to boost its chances of winning power after more than 40 years in opposition.

As part of the process of having a cohesive force, the party last week Thursday, December 2, 2010 held a Family Dialogue meeting at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) hall in Accra.

The object of the meeting, the paper learned, was to enable the CPP break the dominance of the two main political parties- the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), in Ghana’s politics over the years.

Insiders hinted that the meeting, which was chaired by Chairman Ladi Nylander, was very successful and helpful in respect of giving the CPP a new lease of life capable of making a significant impact in the next general election.

“I can tell you for a fact that we had very fruitful deliberations and we agreed on many things that will help the party to stake its legitimate place in Ghana politics. Let me put it bluntly the atmosphere was very friendly as many willingly contributed to the growth of the party,” a CPP national executive who wanted to remain anonymous said.

In attendance were past flag bearers and flag bearer aspirants of the party.

These included Mr. George Oposika Aggudey, 2004 flag bearer; Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, 2008 flag bearer; Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, Mr. Bright Akwetey, Dr. F.W. Akuffo all 2008 flag bearer aspirants.

A source at the meeting disclosed that the general consensus of members was the need to strengthen the awful structures of the party at the grassroots.

According to the source, this was unanimously agreed by members who were present at the meeting.

“We were all unanimous on the need to mobilise funds to support and make the CPP visible and vibrant at the grassroots,” intimated the source.

It was also agreed further at the meeting that CPP card-bearing members be impressed upon to regularly pay their dues to strengthen the financial standing of the party.

Though the above suggestions were agreed upon, the leadership of the party made it clear at the meeting that mobilising funds to support the party at the grassroots must first come from constituency and polling station executives.

Among other issues deliberated upon by the four-five (4-5) hours meeting were its ten-point agenda and party discipline.

On discipline, the leadership cautioned party executives especially, to be disciplined and work within the ambit of the party’s constitution.

There was also an indication that the leadership of the party will not hesitate to punish any executive member who flouts provisions of its constitution.
