Agbeko set sight on unification of titles
Posted by on December 14, 2010 at 9:52 am in Boxing, Sports Joseph “King Kong” Agbeko has set his sights on unification of titles only 24 hours after dominating Columbian Yonnhy Perez to win back his IBF Bantamweight title.
The Bantamweight Champion with an enviable record of (28-2, 22 KOs) told GNA Sports on phone from the USA that unifying the IBF, IBO and WBO titles remains his quest for early next year.
Agbeko who staged a masterful performance against Perez (20-1-1, 14 KOs) to reclaim his IBF Bantamweight title in a rematch of their October 2009 clash, said “ I want a unification of titles for my next fight early next year”.
The “King Kong” said beating Perez for the title which he lost to the Columbian 15 months ago, has set the right tone “for Christmas” and his dreams for the ensuing New Year.
“This is my meal ticket and I’m glad I got it back. I am presenting it to Ghanaians as a Christmas bonus.”
Agbeko who won by a unanimous decision with tallies of 116-112, 117-111 and 115-113 described Perez as a credible opponent.
“He is a very good fighter and very tough all the time. When we fought last year, I underestimated him and did not prepare well because the notice was short. He threw many surprises at me and I could not take it.”
For the first time, the Ghanaian opted to forgo his slugging style from the first fight, and made himself tough to catch; slamming Perez with right hands throughout the night, while making the former champion miss more often than not.
Agbeko attributed the change in style to tactics he developed to win the bout. Though the change in style is hailed as the reason for the victory, the boxer says he will not stick to it but vary it as when it is necessary.
“I changed the style because that was what I needed to win. I cannot say this is my new way of fighting because opponents differ and tactics and style must only be changed where possible.”
