Former General Secretary of the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA), George Osafo Adjei has left the Association in limbo following the disbursement of a grant from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
Information pieced together by GNA Sports indicates that Adjei was alleged to have diverted part of the 10,000 US Dollar grant by the world body meant for the organization of the first ever General Assembly of the Association.
The IAAF gave out the grant for the organization of the General Assembly held on April 24 in Kumasi, but the ex-scribe is yet to furnish the Executives of the Association with the detailed statement of expenditure.
A “supreme” source at the GAA told GNA Sports that Adjei claimed to have channeled part of the grant to other events other than the General Assembly, which clearly contravenes the authority of the IAAF.
Following the IAAF earlier decision not to recognize Professor Dodoo as head of the Association, the former General Secretary served as the IAAF’s contact in the country and exchanged several correspondences.
Adjei, then a signatory to the account of the Association succeeded in getting the other signatory, C.K. Attah, also a former General Secretary of the Association and currently indisposed to append his signature for withdrawal of the amount.
Upon assuming office, the Professor Dodoo-led Executives requested for a statement on the budget, only to realize that parts of the funds were channeled through means other the General Assembly.
The source said Adjei claimed he used parts of the funds to support a trip to Dakar and also in the organization of the World Athletics Day celebration in Ho, the Volta Regional capital in May and has failed to respond to several calls by the new Executives to account for the grant, leaving the Executives’ quest to furnish the IAAF with the statement of account on the General Assembly in a dilemma.
Meanwhile, attempts to contact Adjei to respond to the accusations has proved fruitless.
