Sprite Ball Championship: Grand finale set for Today
Posted by on December 22, 2010 at 4:43 pm in Other Sports, SportsGhana’s budding and young talented basketball players will be on display when the much-awaited grand finale of the 2010 Sprite Ball Championship takes centre stage from on December 22-23rd at the El-Wak stadium.
40 Schools from eight regions will battle for the prestigious title in competition which continues to draw massive inches in the Ghanaian press.
Expectations among the participating schools have reached an epoch stage and defending national champions in the boys and girls division respectively, Armed Forces Technical School and Sacred Heart will have it all to do as they attempt to retain the title they won at the same venue in 2009.
The 5th edition of the competition was expanded to eight regions in 2010 as the championship continues to grow from strength to strength.
The Northern and Brong Ahafo Regions made their debut appearance this year and the performances their representatives indicate could cause an upset in the two-day competition at the citadel of basketball in the West African country.
The winner and first runner-up from all the eight regions in both the boys and girls division respectively have earned the right to play in the grand finale alongside six selected private schools in the Greater Accra Region.
Ketasco, Mawuli, Awudome Girls and Kadjebi –Asato Girls qualified from the Volta Region while Sunyani Senior High (Susec) will be representing the Brong Ahafo Region in both the boys and girls division alongside Abesim-based St James and Techiman Senior High Girls.
Ashanti regional champions, Opoku Ware School, and perennial rivals, Prempeh College, together with Yaa Asantewaa Girls and St Louis complete the list from the garden city.
Twice champions in the Western Region, Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) and rivals St John’s will join the party to Accra with Fijai Girls and Takoradi Senior High Girls also qualifying from the now oil-rich region.
Mfantsipim School, which has won the competition in the Central Region on three successive occasions in the boys division, is one of the overwhelming favourites for the title.
They qualified alongside Adisadel College (Adisco) while last year’s losing finalist Aggrey Memorial and Kasoa-based Insaaniya Girls will also make their presence count.
Koforidua Secondary Technical School (KSTS), Pope John Seminary (Pojoss), Nkawkaw Girls (Kawsec) and Akosombo International School (AIS) will represent the Eastern Region in both the boys and girls division respectively.
