Sunyani West Constituency threaten to sue EC
Posted by on December 29, 2010 at 7:39 pm in Other Top Stories, Politics Fifty aspirants of the District Level and Unit Committee elections at Odumase in the Sunyani West Constituency, have threatened to sue the Electoral Commission (EC) if it fails to organise the polls on Thursday December 30.
Mr Patrick Kwame Anokye Frimpong, one of the aspirants at Awuah Electoral Area and Spokesperson for the group issued the threat in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Wednesday.
He said the EC “has totally disappointed the aspirants and Ghanaians in general”, and called on the EC to render an unqualified apology to the nation and explain the cause of anomalies associated with the polls.
Mr Anokye said the contestants had spent a lot of money to prepare for the election and demanded compensation from the EC.
“The work of the assembly member is sacrificial and does not attract any fund from anywhere,” he said.
Mr Anokye appealed to voters not to be disappointed about the postponement of the elections by turning out in their numbers to vote for their preferred candidates to fight for their cause.
In a related development, some polling stations Officials in the Sunyani East constituency on Wednesday expressed the fear that the postponement of the district assembly and unit committee elections to Thursday would affect voter turnout.
When the GNA visited some voting centres at Abesim, near Sunyani, at 0615 hours on Wednesday some voters were sitting patiently waiting for the elections to start.
Mr Henry Asante, Polling Official at the Temporal Booth Centre of the Abesim Dominase Electoral Area explained that most of the voters reported to the place as early as 0600hours but left when the announcement of the postponement came.
“Most of the visibly furious and angered voters left the centre and threatened to boycott the election tomorrow”, he added.
At Day Nursery Polling Station in the Ankobea Electoral Area, Mr Samuel Atta Twum, Polling Station Official said he overheard some of the voters saying: “You cannot waste our precious time on this election.”
Mr William Okrah, Election Official at Abesim Junior High School “A” in the Gyaase Electoral Area observed that most of the voters had thronged to the centre in their numbers as at 0900 hours to exercise their franchise.
