Ghana opposed to the use of force against Gbagbo

Credible information picked up from the corridors of the ECOWAS Secretariat in Abuja Nigeria indicates that Ghana is strongly against any forcible removal of the incumbent President of Ivory Coast, Laurent Gbagbo.

Joy News has learnt Ghana prefers dialogue in the resolution of the crisis. ECOWAS has threatened military intervention if Mr. Gbagbo does not step down.

There is however fears of a civil war as ECOWAS envoys who met with Mr. Gbagbo failed to convince him to step aside.

There are many Ghanaians who live in Cote d’Ivoire with the majority of them said to be resident in the Gbagbo-controlled southern part of the country.

Sources tell Joy News Ghana fears its nationals could be the subject of attacks if it supports the military action against Gbagbo.

Ghana also fears its maritime boundary with Cote d’Ivoire on which FPSO Kwame Nkrumah is situated could become a target for attack by Mr. Gbagbo’s soldiers if the country supports any military intervention in that country.
