Ex GBC Board Chair is Insane — Apem-Darko

The immediate past Director General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), William Apem-Darko, has labeled the ex-Board Chairman of the national broadcaster as “insincere and a foolish madman.”

Until recently, Professor John Aheto was the Board Chairman of GBC before he was relieved of his post by the National Media Commission (NMC) on Tuesday, March 15.

The beleaguered former director general of GBC said this when responding to questions on Peace Fm in Accra on Thursday. The host Kwame Sefa-Kayi wanted to know his next line of action now that he has also been dismissed by the NMC.

Both men were told to stand-down after the NMC concluded preliminary investigations into allegations of financial malfeasance and corruption.

Mr. Apem-Darko explained that since Prof Aheto took office as the board chairman of GBC what he resorted to was to always indulge in act that plundered the organization into disarray and public ridicule.

He insisted: “This man always did things as if he was a madman. In fact some of us were compelled in many occasions to question the institution he obtained his doctorate from.

… For me, I have doubt of his professorship and will continue to challenge him to explain to Ghanaians the institution that conferred on him his professorship.”

Asked if he had personal grudge with the latter, Mr. Apem-Darko explained that he was surprised at the behavior of Prof. Aheto as he has been his friend for years and even secured a job for him as the deputy Rector at GIMPA some years back.

“He (Prof. Aheto) was a nice person and at a point I had to convince the directors of GIMPA to employ him as a deputy director because he was jobless at the time. But due to his foolishness he had to be demoted to the level of a lecturer.

… And as I said before, this man behaves like a kid and a galamsey operator who wants to mine gold at the least opportunity he gets.”

He, on that score, reiterated his willingness to sue the NMC for terminating his appointment since the allegations, in his view, were of no substance.
