IPS SRC President fired
Posted by on March 22, 2011 at 2:32 pm in Top StoryToday investigations have found evidence that the president of the Students Representative Council (SRC) of the Institute of Professional Studies (IPS), Legon, has officially been relieved of his post and duties.
Mr. Hayford Baah-Tawiah was reportedly impeached by the Judicial Council last week Friday, March 18, on grounds of alleged financial malfeasance and fraud against students of the institute.
Per last Friday’s resolution by the Judicial Council, the level 400 Marketing student together with his treasurer, Reginald Quansah, and another executive, Samuel Owusu, cease to man the financial affairs and other activities of the SRC.
It emerged from our findings that the impeached SRC president reportedly connived with one Dambo Emmanuel and another person who are purported to be staff of Jit Services, a publishing firm, to divert a whopping sum of GH¢16,000 being part payment of GH¢28,000 for the printing of magazines for the institute.
The three, according investigations, plotted to clandestinely subvent the contract to a different company, which is still unknown, and therefore paid the said amount into the accounts of Dambo at the Intercontinental Bank instead of Jit Services— an act which violates the SRC regulations and procedures.
However, when the paper reached Mr. Baah-Tawiah to ascertain the truth or otherwise of the report, he admitted that a decision of that sought was arrived at by the judicial council. But he quickly added that, that decision was “illegal.”
“My brother that was what the judicial council said but as I speak to you, I am still in my office working as the official president of the SRC,” he added.
According to him, the challenges bedeviling his administration are the machinations of some selfish individuals who want to use him to pursue their sinister agenda divulging that he indeed paid the said amount of money into Mr. Dambo’s account but insisted it was “lawful”.
“Yes, it is true I paid the money into the account of Mr. Dambo and I do not see anything wrong with that because he (Dambo) submitted a letter which directed the SRC to clearly pay the money into his account. So, there is nothing wrong with me or us paying the money,” he stressed.
The inability of the beleaguered SRC president to update his executives and the rest of the students on the said contract, originally awarded to Jit Services, triggered suspicion of foul play among the students, grapevine sources said.
“He fumbles like a baby anytime we ask him to update us on the printing of the magazines. And because of that he sometimes does not even turn up for executive meetings. So some of us decided to call for a full-scale investigation into the matter,” a non-executive but an influential member of the SRC told the paper on phone yesterday.
Reports, however, say Baah-Tawiah, upon interrogation, by the executive admitted that he had entered into a gentleman’s agreement with his accomplices, of which he would have received a significant portion of the contract money.
The latter’s purported confession, according to our checks, was captured on tape by the executives.
Aside from that, the Baah-Tawiah is also accused of lavishing more than GH¢18,000 on the celebrations of Face of IPS without the authorization of the executives.
