Teachers angry over delay in promotion
Posted by on July 14, 2011 at 11:02 am in Other Top StoriesA number of teachers in the Sunyani Municipality are worried that their promotion has been delayed for more than a year; two years after satisfying all requirements.
According to the teachers, the delay in their promotion to the right rank has become a canker not only in the Sunyani municipality, but across the length and breadth of the country.
In an interview with Today, Mr. Charles Osei, one of the aggrieved teachers, appealed to the Minister of Education, Betty Mould-Iddrisu and the director-general of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to use their offices to draw the attention of the Controller and Accountant General’s Department to facilitate the payment of their salaries on time.
“I completed University of Cape Coast (UCC) in 2009 and having filled the necessary documents for promotion to the rank of Principal Superintendent, I have not been promoted since then. So you can imagine what I am going through. And I am not the only one; my colleagues in the other parts of the country are also having problems with their promotions. What I heard is that the government says they would not effect the promotions because there is no money to pay the teachers.
… As a journalist you can crosscheck what I am saying at the Controller and Accountant General’s Department. I am sure the minister of education and the GES director-general are not aware of this problem,” Mr. Osei noted.
According to Francis Combert, anytime he goes to the GES office to enquire about his promotion, he is told all his documents have been sent to the Controller and Accountant General’s Department in Accra for the necessary action to be taken.
Certificates ‘A’ teachers who did a top-up diploma and completed in 2009 as well as teachers who completed their tertiary education in 2010 are also having problems with their promotions.
However, checks at the Sunyani municipal education office revealed that all the necessary documents of teachers for their promotion to be effected have been forwarded to the relevant authorities for more than a year now.
