Members of the Central Regional branch of the 31st December Women’s Movement (DWM) have warned former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, not to ‘set a foot in the region’ to thank them because they do not need her appreciation.
Consequently the members have vowed not to have anything to do with the former first lady unless she turns over a new leaf. This was stated in a press release titled “Enough is Enough” and signed by 14 out of the 19 regional organisers of the movement.According to the women, Nana Konadu has been hiding behind what they described as her diabolical schemes to thank the 90 people who voted for her in the recent National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential primaries in Sunyani to incite the youth against President John Evans Atta Mills and the leadership of the party. They indicated that the former first lady’s action is uncalled for, unhealthy and could lead to indiscipline amongst the youth in the party.“We want the youth to be vigilant and not allow themselves to be used by people to achieve their selfish ambition. Nana Konadu is now running to the youth but we want them (youth) to ask themselves what they benefitted from her under her husband’s regime,” they stressed.
The 31st DWM women cautioned Nana Konadu against coming to the region to thank anybody for voting for her maintaining that they were aware of the insults she has been hurling at Fantis and they are not ready to receive or tolerate any of her insults.”The 14 women further indicated that Nana Konadu just want to create disunity and tension in the party noting that she is still maintaining her Friends of Nana Konadu (FONKA) and OLONKA groups although such mushroom groups were banned by the party after the congress. “She hides behind FONKA and OLONKA to spew her evil agenda. All these groups must seize to exist,” they averred. The women also indicated that Nana Konadu’s refusal to accept the verdict of the delegates after the congress was the reason that she and her husband, Mr. Rawlings are trying everything possible to frustrate Prof. John E. A. Mills.“Why is she trying to create the impression that Ghana is very hard to live in Africa under the presidency of President Mills,?’ they asked.“Would she have said the same if her husband or her favourite was leading the party? They further enquired.Continuing, the women alleged that Nana Konadu preaches unity but hides behind ‘her fake smile’ to create disaffection among party members. They bemoaned the situation where she has erected her billboards “Konadu for 2012” in town and appointed one Derrick as her Campaign Manager when she is not a flag bearer of any political party. It was against this background that they called on the former first lady to channel her energy towards reviving her dying women’s movement.
“We are also calling for an immediate election of new zonal organizers since the old ones have overstayed their office,” the women stated. They further advised the former first lady to know better and watch her utterances and help her party to retain power rather than cause its defeat in the 2012 election.
