Minister of Education, Betty Mould-Idrissu has directed the Ghana Education Service to close down schools in Greater Accra to enable NADMO officials deal with the damage caused by last night’s flood.
Speaking to Joy FM on Wednesday, Mrs. Mould-Idrissu said the decision was taken to safeguard the lives of the children as the authorities are not in a position to ascertain whether the school infrastructure are safe after the heavy downpour.
As part of the directive, children who are already in school have been asked to stay put until their parents come for them.
She said school authorities and NADMO officials have been tasked to ensure that the affected schools and vicinities are provided with relief items.
A heavy downpour last night has left many parts of Accra devastated as properties worth thousands of Ghana cedis are said to have been destroyed.
Some roads have also been rendered impassable, with unconfirmed reports of five deaths.
Meanwhile NADMO has provided these emergency numbers for affected residents to call for assistance. 0302772926; 0302780541; 0202019090; 0289554160; 0299350030.
