The Foreign Affairs Minister of Ghana, Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni, has welcomed calls for a probe into the US$500,000 expenditure made by his ministry as part of funeral expenses for some slain Ghanaians in The Gambia.

The Gambian government made available to Ghana some amount of money to compensate the families of the deceased and to foot the bills of the funerals.

The sector minister in Parliament last week made a summary presentation of the expenditure, which raised a lot of eyebrows even from within the ruling NDC.

The Ghana Integrity Initiative and other institutions have called for a probe into the expenses, a proposal backed by the NDC propaganda secretary, Richard Quashigah.

Alhaji Mumuni said he is ready for any probe if Ghanaians are still not satisfied with the breakdown of the spending.

“The question in Parliament asked us to present a list of beneficiaries or people who have received the contribution or the compensation,” Mumuni said.

“My officers decided that they would also present the expenditure list which was in summary form to Parliament and all of the attention now shifted to the list of expenditure which was in summary form.

“If you want to come and listen; fine, but at the end of the day if they are not satisfied and they still believe that a probe is the right thing to unearth all of the facts and the details, so be it. ”

Mumuni added: “We would welcome a probe to deal with these matters in a manner that would bring the issues to some kind of a finality. ”
