A member of the communications team of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Felix Kwakye Ofosu has rubbished claims that there could a close margin in the presidential election results in 2012.
He accused the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of doctoring the 2008 election figures from Ashanti region, the party’s stronghold which according to him recorded over 100 per cent of voter turnout resulting in the close margin of the presidential results.
The 2008 presidential election results were very close. Then candidate J. E. Mills of the NDC pulled 50.23 per cent and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo also pulled 49.77 after the second round of the keenly contested elections.
The NPP argued that the closeness of the election of 2008, did not suggest a rejection by Ghanaians but rather failure on their part to close the “deal”. The NPP is therefore bent on unseating the NDC in 2012 because according to them, they have done their home work well.
The NDC on the other hand is convinced it will widen the gap to enable them continue their better Ghana agenda. What has made them more optimistic is the recent survey by the UK-based Economist Intelligence Unit in which it predicted a slim victory for the ruling party in yet another bitter election.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday, Felix Ofosu Kwakye said the intimidation on most NDC polling agents in the Ashanti region gave the NPP the leeway to rig the elections.
He recounted how some NDC bigwigs, notable Dr. Oteng Adjei, a polling agent for Bosomtwe was beaten and how NDC Ashanti Regional Secretary Joseph Yamin was imprisoned while voting was ongoing as clear examples of ploys adopted by the NPP to rig the elections.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu maintained that despite the vile machination of the NPP, President Mills won the election in 2008.
Touting the enormous achievements chalked by the Mills-led administration in just three years in office, he was convinced the 2012 elections would be a ‘cool chop’ for the NDC.
“The NDC has done much much better than the NPP. We have the most stable macro economic climate in over 20 years. Today inflation is at 8.55 per cent which the NPP never archived”.
The NDC youth activist noted that the difference between the two administration (NDC and NPP) is prudent management resources and accelerated development spearheaded by President Mills.
He added that there has been vast improvement in Education, health, agriculture, national security and other vital sectors of the economy.
The NDC communications team member stated that the NPP has resorted to beating war drums ahead of the 2012 general elections to intimidate Ghanaians for votes because defeat stares in the face.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu observed that the humble and God-fearing nature of President Mills is a plus to the NDC for a landslide victory in 2012.
