The Minister for Roads and Highways, Mr. Joe Gidisu, has disclosed that government as part of its commitment to curtail the flood menace faced by commuters who ply the Old Ada- Ashaiman main road and Adjei Kojo road is sourcing funds for the development of an interchange.

He said that the interchange will help to ease the flooding of the underpass which links Old Ada, Ashaiman and Adjei Kojo roads which also forms part of Lashibi/Klagon routes which fall within the Tema, Ashaiman and Adenta Municipal Assembly areas in the Greater Accra Region.

According to Mr. Gidisu, these roads which form part of the continuation of the road corridor that links Teshie- Nungua to the Ashaiman underpass becomes flooded due to the adjacent unlined storm drain that gets silted after any heavy downpour.

The Minister, said this, when answering a question asked by the Member of Parliament for Ashaiman constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Mr. Alfred Kwame Agbesi, in Parliament last Wednesday regarding the measures put in place to re-design and construct the underpass linking Klagon-Lashibi to AdjeiKojo, Ashaiman, Tema and its environs so as to stop the frequent deaths resulting after heavy downpours.

He added that the storm drain adjacent to the underpass which silts up after heavy rains was desilted in 2011 to reduced the level of flooding as compared to previous years.

He added that routine desilting of such drains will continue this year.

The Minister stressed that a detailed design will be made to lead to the construction of the interchange as soon as the funding is secured.

Also commenting on the question regarding the asphalt overlay project for the Awaso-Bibiani road posed to his office by the MP for Bibiani-Anhwiaso – Bekwai in the Western Region, Mr. Christopher Addae, he indicated that the road forms part of the Tarkwa – Bogoso – Ayanfuri – Asawinso – Bibiani respectively.

He said the project is an asphaltic concrete surfaced road, which is an integral part of the Highway route IR8 which is located in the Western Region.

“For now, there is no immediate programme for asphalt overly of this road. However, inventory is being taken on the asphalt scaling of potholes on the road,” he mentioned.
