Government has secured about $ 72m from the Danish Government to support the health sector.

The grant will go into the implementation of the health sector Medium Term Development Plan.

At a brief signing ceremony in Accra, the Danish Ambassador to Ghana, Carsten Nilans Pedersen, said his government, through DANIDA, has supported the sector over the years.

And this has helped in reducing to less than five mortality rate and increasing the number of supervised deliveries and nearly a complete eradication of guinea worm cases.

Mr. Carsten Nilans Pedersen said though the maternal mortality rate has decreased it remains the second largest cause of female death and with the present progress it is unlikely that Ghana will meet the Millennium Development Goal 5 by 2015 and therefore continued support and engagement is needed within this area.

He said Danida in collaboration with the government and other development partners will continue to focus on moving affordable quality health services closer to the people in need and address sexual and reproductive health and rights including available and affordable services for family planning.

He said Danida will continue to provide sector budget support to the Ministry of Health to support implementation of the Health Sector Medium Term Development Plan and also support the Government to focus on capacity development by providing long term embedded technical assistance as requested by the partners.
